an English translation of the novel

A page for other SSY stuff I find interesting.

I’m a big fan of the choral songs, Kage no Denshouka 1, 2, and 3, in the OST. They’re really atmospheric and give the anime a unique character. Given the name of the song, which roughly translates to “Song of the Legend of the Shadow”, I imagine the lyrics might reveal some things about the story. So here are the translations!

Legend of the Shadow 1

deep in the village, an unbroken path
teaches lies, following the path
hairpin turns appear and disappear
chasing a friend’s shadow, visiting his grave
in a shrine deep in the forest
on the edge of the mountain, concealed by clouds
shadows become lies

Legend of the Shadow 2

in a dark forest where you lose your way
if you listen carefully
there comes a warning to turn back
in faint whispers
things live and die
where is the god that rules over it all
close your eyes, carve into your heart
that forgotten voice

Legend of the Shadow 3

waits inside a cloud
quietly, quietly waiting
stepping toward the vast ocean
in search of a world that does not exist
cast aside your weak heart
on the path that connects past and future
lives join and
escape broken barriers
Tsukuba’s peak melts into darkness
come, cross over

  1. Thank you very much!!! Love these songs and looking for the lyrics for quite a while!!

  2. Julie de Slytherin says:

Could you please explain for me the meaning of the first version of LotS?

    • I don’t know if there’s any deep meaning behind it; seems to me it’s just talking about the main parts of the story, and about the how deep the deception is in their society

  3. Is there a place where I can download this version of the songs? The only ones I could find are the ones that don’t have Japanese words.

  4. I found another example of a “sacred barrier” in the film “Wood Job” (Yaguchi Shinobu, 2014).

Hey, just wanted to ask for some clarification on the lyrics – I am transcribing the first song but the words aren’t matching up. The first 嘘 should sound like “uso” but in the song I hear “ura”. And the second uso I hear something like “reda” but I am pretty certain I’m hearing it wrong. I checked saiga’s jp dictionary and it says that 嘘 is read as “uso”, “kyo” or “ko” which sounds nothing like what I hear in the song.

  6. Thank so you so much for these translations! Could you possibly add romaji to the lyrics; I’d really like to learn these songs

  7. Celebrating the completion of the translation, I made a fanart:

  8. Guys, right click on the audio bar and click ‘save audio as’.
